My father was a World War II combat veteran - that's him facing the camera, slighly left of center.
He served in Europe as a GI. He was wounded in action while assisting
a fallen comrade onto a moving troop truck; the truck rolled over a
mine, and the blast threw him across the road. For the wounds he was
awarded a Purple Heart, and for valor he was awarded the Bronze
Star. He regarded the medals, and war in general, with great
disdain. "It was bullshit" he would say.
